Dog training – Control your frustration and have quality time with your dog

Dog training demands patients and kindness on your part. Young puppies must be looked upon as young babies. Puppies rely on you for everything including good guidance. Teaching your dog good from bad at an early stage is essential.

Remember just like a child dogs will learn more in their early years than later on in life.

Some tips to help you:

Never hit you’re dog and especially not on the nose. The nose is the most sensitive area on your dog and hitting him will only create a nervous dog afraid of his owner. You need to create a happy medium. A strong voice at the times of destructive behaviour will work equally as good as hitting. Pick a word that the dog will get to know easily with a strong voice such as STOP or NO.

There may be times that you are not there so always have a variety of dog toys for your dog to play with, the more the better to cut out boredom. You should spend at least 20 minutes a day playing with your dog and the toys and give him a small treat as a reward. By doing this your dog will understand that these toys will reward him with a treat and it’s fun.

How do I stop my dog from chewing the furniture?

A common problem experienced by many. Dogs can be very destructive to expensive furniture if not trained properly. To help you overcome this problem you should:

  • Spray furniture legs and base with a spray recommended by a vet
  • Change the dogs toys on a monthly basis (especially for puppies)
  • Do not allow your dog jump on furniture
  • Exercise your dog and do not leave him in the house 24/7

My dog barks continuously, how do I stop him?

Unfortunately barking is natural for a dog. It is there way to communicate and mark their territory. Dog collars can help but only use in extreme cases. They send a small electric shock to your dog. Sometimes more attention is needed; dog’s left in the yard 24/7 is cruel and may well lead too excessive barking.

Training manuals are available online at cheap prices and are a good idea to help you set commands and good behaviour for your dog.
