Common cat health care concerns

There are a number of cat health care concerns that are common to all feline owners. For instance the "to declaw or not to declaw" debate. Spaying and neutering issues are another top concern pet owners express to their veterinarians. Hairballs and fleas are among the other cat health care issues brought up during routine vet visits.

If your cat will be an exclusively inside cat and repeated clawing at people or other pets has become a problem it may be time to take a look at having kitty declawed. If its just furniture and or other household items that are being "victimized" try a scratching post, or better yet two or more placed in various rooms, before you make the decision to declaw. Declawing is a common and relatively safe cat health care procedure performed under general anesthesia. It is proven to be one of the safest procedures and your cat should be able to resume amusing you with his antics within a couple of days.

Flea and hairball treatments can be purchased in most supermarkets and department stores, or through your veterinarian. Hairballs are a common problem, especially with longhaired cats and or with breeds that tend to shed a lot. The most effective medication for this is an ointment that is applied to the paws and the cat then licks off during normal grooming. There is a similar ointment available for flea prevention. Other over the counter treatments for flea problems include flea collars, flea shampoo and flea powder. There are also several products available to treat your home and property if your cat has become infested with fleas. It is of course always best to consult your vet about any cat health care concerns before attempting to treat them yourself.
