Pet grooming - is this the job for you?

You seem to have no problems grooming your own pet and you actually enjoy it, so now your considering going into the pet grooming business. There are a number of things to consider before making a decision. Perhaps most importantly you will need to be able to recognize when NOT to groom a pet that is brought in, for instance if you notice a medical issue that must first be brought to the attention of a veterinarian. You will also need to be comfortable handling pets with a range of temperaments. It can be a difficult job. Good communication skills, which are necessary to build a rapport with pet owners, are also a huge plus.

In a pet grooming job your personal safety should also be foremost in your mind. Dogs and cats can be aggressive and even potentially lethal to a groomer in rare instances. The bare minimum the pet grooming business should require is a rabies vaccination. Make sure to ask the pet’s owner if their pet has any "no touch zones". For instance a cat may claw and hiss whenever his throat area is touched or a dog may be sensitive to touch in a certain area of her hindquarters. You will still have to work around these areas but at least you will be prepared. Consider buying bite and scratch proof gloves and be sure to ask the owner if they mind their pet being muzzled if necessary. Keep in mind that you can refuse grooming services to any animal about which you have a safety concern.

The pet’s safety should also be a priority. Make sure to keep the animal secured whenever a potential escape route may be a concern, such as someone opening a door, as you are finishing up a bath. There are also many pets grooming supplies and equipment that an animal could be harmed by if allowed roaming freely about the grooming facility. If none of the above concerns puts a damper on your desire to go into the pet grooming business, then it probably is a good job for you. Taking a beginning business management course at a local community college may be helpful as well.
