Does a bark control collar really work?
The first thing to think about when looking for a bark control collar is
which kind you may want to use. There are three main types. One emits a
noxious spray when the dog barks, another gives a mild electric shock
brought on by the dog’s bark and vocal chord vibration, the third emits a
high pitched sound. The goal of all of these is for the dog to associate the
output of the bark control collar with his barking, but do they work?
Some people believe that the electric shock and ultrasonic noise bark
control collars are inhumane and that by stopping the dog from barking you
can make the dog develop other bad habits such as chewing on the furniture
when he is alone. The effectiveness of these bark collars is hotly debated.
One British study claims that the ultrasonic collar has only a 30% rate of
effectiveness. However others claim that if used properly these bark control
collars have a very high rate of efficiency.
Consult with your veterinarian or dog trainer before using a bark control
collar and ask for advice about which is safest and which works best. Bark
